For many of us, January marked a fresh start after a steady holiday reset. If you felt the same as I did, you probably came in with fresh ideas and a renewed sense of motivation. You launched or restarted operations, executed New Year’s promotions, revamped some of your business practices, or maybe even rebranded. Your consistency has been strong, and you may have seen some growth. However, you’ve now reached the midway point of the year, and there’s a strong chance that your feelings are a lot different now than they were six months ago. Personally, I’ve reached a point of boredom with the current state of my business. That’s not to say that I’m dissatisfied with where my company is, but I’ve merely grown bored with the process of doing the same thing repeatedly. I’ve even questioned my own motivation at times. However, I’ve realized that the journey isn’t always meant to feel exciting, and that’s okay. Boredom, at altitude, is actually a good sign.
Your mind can play tricks on you at times along your path. It has a way of making you feel that you should be doing more or making drastic decisions to shake things up, but boredom is a very normal and rational emotion. In society, we tend to attach a negative connotation to the word, but it can truly represent something very positive. Here is what makes boredom important along your journey:
It reveals how much you want it
Becoming bored is a natural part of a long pursuit, and yet it’s beautiful in terms of what it means for your passion. Just because you get bored with a process does not mean you don’t love what you do; in fact, it reveals how much you love it by continuing to put forth effort despite how bored you feel. You don’t truly know how much you want something until things become difficult, redundant, or both.
The great ones find motivation in boredom
We all look at the great accomplishments of public figures and give them praise, but we rarely get to see the grueling hours of work behind that status. The great ones didn’t get there through inconsistency, but rather by creating a routine and sticking with it. Having raw talent can make one good, but consistent work through the boring stretches is what makes one great.
“You have to work hard in the dark to shine in the light.”
This was one of the lessons the late, great Kobe Bryant took away from Muhammad Ali, mentioned in “The Mamba Mentality: How I Play.” This means being willing to put in the blood, sweat, and tears behind closed doors, even when you don’t feel like it. Continuing to find motivation in boredom is how the greats of each generation persevered and became icons in their respective fields.
It makes you appreciate the exciting times that much more
Finally, the boring stretches of your journey deepen your appreciation for the times you find most exciting. Your moments of inspiration will return, and they’ll feel bigger after a stretch where you had to push through without them. The fruits of your labor will taste better after the consistent tending to your land during times when you had no desire to do so. The wins help you stay in love with the process when it doesn’t feel good. Sometimes, all you need is a taste of success to endure what comes with it.

Six months from now, you could be celebrating the holidays while feeling a deep sense of gratitude for the standard you’ve set in this boring middle. Your perspective of boredom could be the difference between remaining stagnant and eventually living the life that you envision for yourself. So, when you’re cruising, and it doesn’t feel like much is happening, don’t reach for the controls just to feel something. Trust your altitude. And when you’re finally ready to descend, don’t focus on simply landing; remember your why and the exact place that you meant to land from the start.
